The Best & Worst Buys of May 2024

How to make sense of all the "sales"

May is a fantastic month to make all sorts of purchases purely because Memorial Day sales start early and trickle in to the month well before the long weekend.

To help prepare you, here is a road map of the best bargains you can expect and some purchases to avoid.

What’s included this week:

🛒 Your 5 Best Buys In May

Appliances: You can expect up to 40% off from Lowe’s, Best Buy and Home Depot on major appliances and additional incentives if you’re buying several appliances.

Furniture: Incredible appliance savings for both indoor and outdoor furniture can be snagged from any of your favourite retailers, In particular local stores serve as a treasure chest of savings whether you need to replace an old couch or need a multi-piece patio set.

Small Appliances: The savings are signifiant if you’re in the market for a multi-cooker, griddle, air fryer, ice cream maker or blender. Costco, Sam’s Club, Macy’s, Walmart and Kohl’s have all sorts of crazy discounts throughout the month.

Blinds: With no rhyme or reason in particular, blind and drape deals are stronger Memorial Day and in the month of May than any other time of the year. Window treatments are up to half price and BOGO deals can be found from all sorts of retailers.

Spring Clothing: With stores operating on a release schedule that’s generally two months ahead of the average consumer, most spring items are practically on clearance.

3 Purchases To Avoid In May

Laptops, Tablets and TV’s: Despite the odd deal from a warehouse club like Costco or Sam’s Club, most home electronic deals will have their prices slashed on Amazon Prime Day. Amazon Prime Day typically falls the second week of July  - where stores like Walmart and Best Buy offer retaliatory sales in response to Amazon’s efforts.

Under Garments: I actually learned more about this phenomenon through observing my wife’s shopping habits. Most lingerie retailers follow the sales pattern of Victoria’s Secret which offers its own Semi-Annual sale in the month of June. That means all sorts of under garments including swimwear drop to some unprecedented low prices in the month of June, not in the month of May.

Perennial Flowers and Plants: With popularity at its peak right now, you’ll cut your costs by up to 60% if you can wait until August. Since Perennial plants can be planted in either the spring or fall, Your patience will pay off!

🤫 This Gas Saving Hack Can Save You Big!

(THIS IS NOT SPONSORED)

If you don’t have the time to drive around trying to find the best gas prices in your area, there is one app that can actually do that work for you. I started using an app-called GasBuddy last year for any situations where I need to fill up and there isn’t a Costco or Sam’s Club gas station nearby. This free app reveals the cheapest gas stations in your area, so you don't run the risk of overpaying when filling up your tank.

What I love about the app is that not only are your local gas station prices updated in real-time, but it also allows you to see what the prices are in another town/state which is super helpful for road trip planning.

Here is an example of what the map looks like when searching

You can find out more about the app I’ve been enjoying by clicking here.
