🛫 What Are Your Rights When Your Flight Gets Canceled?

Plus, How To Shop TAX FREE in 2024!

If your household was affected by the mass global airline cancelations and delays over the past 72 hours, part of this week’s newsletter aims to ensure you know your right when it comes to compensation.

The rules have recently changed so this is what you need to know!

🤔 What happens if your flight is canceled?

Whether it’s a mechanical issues or global tech outage similar to the CrowdStrike incident that started to plague systems last Thursday, there is a new department of transportation rule that you need to know about.

You are now entitled to a full refund when your flight is canceled REGARDLESS OF THE REASON! That’s new and currently in effect.

Airlines are also now required to offer refunds for a flight if your departure or arrival time has changed by 3 or more hours on a domestic flight or 6 hours for international flights.

🎫 Which airlines go above and beyond?

When it comes to the commitments for "controllable cancellations” like a global tech outage, here’s who is on top.

Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Jet Blue and United will all rebook you on a partner airline at no additional cost if your flight is cancelled. Allegiant, Frontier, Southwest and Spirit will only rebook you on a flight on THEIR airline.

All major U.S. airlines will give you complimentary hotel accommodations if you are affected by an overnight flight cancelation, EXCEPT for Frontier.

If your cancelation results in a prior wait time of 3 hours or more from the scheduled departure time, of all the major U.S. Airlines, you will only receive a credit voucher from Alaska, Jet Blue and Southwest Airlines. No other carrier promises to do that.
