šŸ’° The Deal Guy Newsletter Issue #22

Plus, 5 Items You SHOULD Buy & Exclusive Costco Deals!

This week Iā€™m breaking down the 4 massive savings opportunities that are still to come for those planning ahead for the holidays.

Iā€™ll also examine some middle class finance insights that may help you level up your money game by the end of the year!

Whatā€™s included this week:

šŸ‘€ Top 4 Deal Days Still To Come in 2024

With Black Friday falling on a much later date this year, I wanted to outline a few key approaching dates that you should be aware of in order to get the most out of your holiday shopping budget.

The Week That Precedes Black Friday (Nov. 22 - 28): Iā€™ve done the math and many of the deals that drop for the week leading up to Black Friday can often be better than what we see on the big day itself.

ā€œEarly Accessā€ Sales like the one above from Kohlā€™s can often bring major savings

Retailers like Walmart and Best Buy stagger their massive discounts with many popping up on the day of Thanksgiving itself.

Black Friday (Nov. 29): With few exceptions (like toys which Iā€™ll revisit below), Black Friday brings the lowest prices of the year on close to 60% of the average storeā€™s seasonal merchandise.

Big ticket items are best purchased around this time if you can plan accordingly. Brands that rarely offer big discounts like Apple, Sony and Nintendo all seem to join in on the momentum.

Cyber Monday (Dec. 2): Since Cyber Monday falls one week closer to Christmas in 2024 than prior years, I expect discounts to be even more aggressive on anything computer and tech related (with the exception of tvā€™s that are best purchased Black Friday), including storewide discounts for fashion, gift card reductions and plenty of travel deals that begin to drop.

Best Buyā€™s Cyber Monday sale was very impressive last year!

After Christmas / Boxing Day / Retail Desperation Day: (Dec. 26 - 31) Call it what you want but the days that follow Christmas, stores do their best to liquidate stock and recoup as much cash as possible to meet those end of the year numbers!

Walmartā€™s After Christmas Clearance Sale went live 7am on December 26th!

Whether itā€™s a vehicle, an entire appliance suite, or holiday related items that can no longer be effectively marketed, this is a stellar time to save!

šŸ“ˆ Simple Ways To Level Up From Middle Class to Upper Class

For this weekā€™s newsletter I wanted to take a deeper look at how both groups handle their money and share some insights that have inspired me to level up my own financial game as we head into the end of the year.

Wealth Accumulation

  • Middle Class: Relies primarily on savings, home equity, and retirement accounts. This is a secure and steady way to prepare for the future, but it can sometimes feel like progress is slow.

  • Upper Class: Grow their wealth through diverse investmentsā€”everything from real estate portfolios to stocks and businesses. Their goal is to make their money work for them in the long term, often with an eye toward generational wealth.

Key takeaway:

Itā€™s important to balance savings with investments. You donā€™t need a lot of money to start investing. Try to budget in small monthly contributions to index funds or ETFs, which can provide stable returns over time with lower risks than individual stocks.

Consumption Patterns

  • Middle Class: Prioritize practical spending, but also enjoy the occasional indulgence in travel, dining out, or luxury subscriptionsā€”especially if theyā€™re on sale or through free trials (I can vouch for this from my household's experience!).

  • Upper Class: Regularly invests in luxury brands, high-end experiences, and exclusive events, although if I had that amount of money I can safely say I would avoid luxury and designer goods whenever possible.

Key takeaway:

Focus on value and quality over brand name. You donā€™t need to spend lavishly to enjoy life. Instead, look for deals and discounts that allow you to experience quality without over-extending your budget.

Education

  • Middle Class: Focus on public education, affordable universities, and stable employment afterward. Scholarships and financial aid are essential for many families, and while student loans may be part of the equation, they can be seen as a necessary investment.

  • Upper Class: Elite private schools and Ivy League universities often play a big role in the upper class's education paths. But beyond education, they also leverage connections and networking to secure high-level opportunities in competitive industries.

Key takeaway:

While education is a great equalizer, it's also important to invest in skill-building, networking, and continuous learning. Seek out affordable ways to expand your knowledge and professional network, such as online courses or local events.

Income Level

  • Middle Class: Earns a stable income that covers basic needs, with some left for savings or leisure. This could mean you may rent versus owning although thatā€™s not always the case depending on geographic location.

  • Upper Class: Enjoys significantly higher earnings, often derived from investments, business ownership, or high-level professions. The upper class enjoys a greater cushion, allowing them to focus more on growing wealth than covering expenses.

Key takeaway:

Income differences aside, think about how you can create additional income streams, such as starting a side hustle or investing even small amounts. Tools like high-interest savings accounts or retirement accounts can make your earnings work harder for you over time.
