🥤 Free ICEE Day Is Coming: On August 18, participating retailers nationwide are giving away a small ICEE with no purchase required.

Participating locations include Walmart Fuel, Krystal, Urban Air Adventure Park (must already have admission), AMC Theatres & Regal Cinemas (with valid ticket) and Santikos Entertainment.

Steve from CA writes: “I found a few of these liquidation stores in my area. Bin discount stores, also known as liquidation bin stores or treasure hunt stores, are discount retail outlets that sell customer returns, overstock, and closeout merchandise from major retailers like Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Instead of being neatly placed on shelves, products are dumped into giant physical bins where shoppers dig through them. They generally operate on a weekly flat-rate pricing model where everything in the bins starts at a high price on restock day and drops lower each day until clearing out.”

Kirk from NV writes: “After I retired, I realized our car was being driven thousands of miles less each year, but our insurance company still had our old annual mileage estimate. I called and updated it and our premium dropped. If you work from home or drive much less than you used to, it might be worth checking what mileage your insurer has on file.”

Erin from TX writes: “I discovered our public library offers much more than books. With my library card I can get free digital magazines, movies and passes to several local museums and attractions. Some of the passes would have cost our family more than $50 so I now check the library before buying admission anywhere.”

❌ Current iPhone Pro Models: We are extremely close to Apple’s usual September launch window. Wait to see what happens to prices and trade-in offers once the next models arrive.

❌ Amazon Devices: Echo, Ring, Kindle and Fire TV devices regularly see much deeper discounts during Amazon’s October and November sales.

❌ Halloween Decor: I would grab something unique that you think will sell out, but otherwise there is plenty of time for better promotions.

❌ Winter Boots and Winter Coats: Cold-weather merchandise is just arriving and the better seasonal discounts are still months away.

❌ TVs: August can produce scattered deals at Warehouse Clubs, but Black Friday pricing is usually much more aggressive if your current TV can survive a few more months.

❌ Small Kitchen Appliances: Air fryers, coffee makers, mixers and similar appliances become major Labor Day Deals. Unlike mattresses, these sales rarely drop weeks early so I would wait.

❌ Video Games and Accessories: Controllers, games and accessories generally become much more promotional as we get closer to the holidays.

❌ Fitness Equipment: August is not one of the stronger times for treadmills, weights and home gym equipment. We’ll see a few pop-up deals in October before the holidays.

I featured this app over a year ago, but it has grown substantially since then, with many creators on TikTok and Instagram now showing off their daily hauls.

Too Good To Go is an app that lets restaurants, bakeries and grocery stores sell surplus food at a steep discount instead of throwing it away. You browse nearby offers, reserve/pay for a “Surprise Bag” and pick it up during a set window.

With a family, I like it most for flexible meals and snacks, and my biggest tip is to check ratings and save your favorite locations because the best bags can disappear quickly.

The tradeoff is that you usually do not know exactly what is inside until pickup, but that is also where the value comes from, with bags often including pizza, meats, baked goods or prepared foods for a fraction of their normal price.

We usually have Hulu Plus/Disney/ESPN and it's like $100 monthly. Is there anything cheaper? We also enjoy local news and national news shows like Today. Also, any deals for us 65+ folks?”

YouTube TV just launched a Sports Plan with ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, NFL Network and more for $54.99 per month for the first 12 months for eligible new customers (this is not a sponsored shoutout). Donna asks: “I was wondering- I live in a smaller town and there’s no Costco close to me. Although we just got an Aldi’s, it’s ok for some things, I’d like to get a Costco membership but is it worth it for delivery only?”

Great to hear from you Donna! For two or more people, I think a Costco membership can 100% be worth it for online shopping alone. There are enough groceries, household essentials, clothing and larger purchases to make the $65 membership useful.

The only thing I would be mindful of is that more often than not, Costco’s online prices are higher than those that are in-store (due to shipping and handling costs built-in). So for someone using them purely through delivery, it’s always important to still cross-compare with other stores before completing your order.

Cindy asks: “Loved the information on cruises. I would like to take a cruise by myself, approximately 5 days. To avoid paying for double occupancy I looked at single cruises. They feature young people in their ads. I moved on to single senior cruises where the prices seemed higher. Can you help navigate this process? Thanks for all your help in the past!”

Hi Cindy! My biggest suggestion is to stop searching for “senior singles cruises.” Search regular cruises for one passenger and look specifically for ships with solo cabins, which can dramatically reduce or eliminate the extra single supplement.

Norwegian is particularly good for solo travelers, while Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Holland America also offer single cabins on select ships. Compare the final price for one traveler, not the advertised per-person fare, and I would only pay extra for a senior group sailing if you actually want the organized social experience.
